Success in My Community’s projects will be heavily based
on the balance created between Social, Environmental, Economic, and Governance Factors.
Research has proven that community members generally feel safer in well lit, and clean (public spaces) but they are not motivated to maintain these spaces if it is the responsibility of a particular organization to maintain it.
We believe that if the community fully participates in the clean-up and revitalization of their community; with continuous education, awareness and enforcement of penalties they will be more likely to maintain these public areas, including their immediate environments.
COMMUNITY GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
Recycling Education & Awareness
My Community is committed to working within the schools, as early as preschool level, to educate students on the importance of keeping the environment clean, as well as, recycling and repurposing trash. The project also seeks to monetize the initiative to benefit the schools and the students.
Entrepreneurship &
Economic Empowerment
Many opportunities exist throughout the community to utilize the gifts and talents of its citizenry to empower them by way of entrepreneurship. My Community is the engine to connect the talents with the investors or other resources to assist in building sustainable businesses, using cluster and cooperative models.
Clean Public Space
My Community seeks to improve the overall presentation of our community by taking responsibility for its upkeep, we desire to do our part in our immediate surrounding and participate in ongoing community clean up projects. On a larger scale, we will influence policy/laws to be developed and enforced against littering.
Historical Promotion & Awareness
There is something very empowering about knowing and understanding one’s history, therefore, we seek to work with existing historical preservation organizations to support the same and promote the history indigenous to each community. It is important to build a legacy that lives beyond the current day leaders and preserving history does that well and ignites pride in those connected to such rich history.
A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
Social Factors
Without a sense of pride and responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of public places there will be no effort made by community members to look after and care for these spaces, to feel a compulsion to report persons littering and vandalizing these places, and to encourage each other to do the same. Only this can cause the love and ownership of community to become ingrained and passed on.
Environmental Factors
The overall health of the community relies on everyone doing their part to minimize water pollution, the infestation of rodents and subsequent diseases. Over time the environment breaths increased anti-social behavior when people see the state of the environment around them. The perception from others contribute to persons in these communities believing that they are products of a lesser environment; often referred to as a “ghetto”.
Economic Factors
The increased governmental cost and failed private efforts for clean-up and maintenance in the community, the greater the burden that eventually leads to it becoming less of a priority, but the further neglect thereof due to the lack of resources or interest, the greater the challenge will be in the long run to restore. The deterrence of investments and tourists due to the degradation and reputation of the community is a significant economic loss. The general decline in business and personal assets due to increased anti-social behaviors, and subsequent increased crime are all currently existing issues that will only get worse if not addressed.
Governance Factors
These factors include partnerships between private, government, social and civic organizations to ensure commitment by all stakeholders to balance leadership and resources for such an undertaking. To influence and enforce policies and procedures that cement the foundation to further grow and succeed at achieving our initiatives.
