On September 1st, 2019, the eye of Hurricane Dorian made landfall on Abaco island with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h), making it the strongest hurricane on record to affect the Bahamas. Later, Dorian sat over us stalling on Grand Bahama island for 2 days.
What we saw made us weak to our knees and stomachs. Areas that never experienced flooding were flooded. Schools and many businesses including the financial institutes are closed. There is no power, and the saltwater has threatened our drinking water.
Many lives are lost. In the midst of this terrifying encounter, a glimmer of hope sparked in our communities. This glimmer of hope is the outreach of various international and local organizations helping in whichever capacity they can.
Today, October 1st, 2019, My Community Bahamas was able to assist many families through our west Grand Bahama distribution initiative.
Thanks to the international disaster relief NGO’s, and local government and organizations who came and supported The Bahamas.
